Prep 4 Volcano Making
To introduce our new class text, ‘Escape from Pompeii’, the pupils created their own volcanoes and staged mini eruptions! This experience helped to immerse them in the world of the characters from our book. The pupils used large pop bottles and A3 paper (decorated with boulders and lava trails!) to create the volcano mound and then added a ‘slurry’ mixture of bicarbonate of soda, water and washing up liquid to the bottle. To create the eruption, they mixed red food colouring with white vinegar and poured it into their volcanoes!
Prep 5 Astronaut Training
The pupils took part in Astronaut Training, to experience what it would be like for the characters in our new class text, ‘Cosmic’. The challenges included: working in teams to build the tallest Lego tower whilst wearing ‘astronaut’ gloves, landing a ‘rocket’ on the station whilst blindfolded, sitting in a dark, confined space and emerging as close to thirty seconds as they could, completing as many sit ups, push ups and squats as possible in thirty seconds and taking part in a memory game – trying to recall twenty items at once!
