Exploring Cultural Diversity on International Day of Languages

Posted: 10th April 2025

We kicked off the new half term in style on 24th February with a school-wide celebration of mother tongue languages. International Day of Languages is in its 25th year and it raises awareness of the different languages children may speak at home amongst families and friends but are not spoken at school.

At Edenhurst, we are a diverse community and we are very fortunate to have so many cultural influences amongst our families. Children speak a wide range of mother tongue languages including Bengali, Kannada, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, Pushtu plus many more.

The day involved all children from Reception to Prep 6 being immersed in different languages through teacher-led workshops in Music/Dance, PE, Maths, Art and Humanities. We were also very lucky to have a parent-led session in Form 1 from Magnus’ Mum who taught the children some Mandarin!

Activities included African drums and Zumba dance, British Sign Language in Maths, using Venetian lace to create clay tiles in Art and flag identification and key phrases from a range of languages in Humanities. Jen went to Italy in the Dining Room for lunch, with the children enjoying a ‘gelateria’ bar for dessert and our wonderful EPTA ran a French café at breaktime serving up croissants, pains au chocolat and ‘chocolat chaud’! Merci EPTA.
